The 2004 Recycling Regulation (B.C. Reg. 449/2004) replaced the 1997 Beverage Container Product Stewardship Program Regulation (which replaced the 1970 Litter Act, which required manufacturers and retailers to participate in a deposit system to encourage the return of many types of beverage containers).

Oregon Paint Stewardship (HB 3037 / HB 2191)

HB 3037, enacted in 2009 and amended in 2011 as HB 2191, requires manufacturers of architectural paint to establish and finance an environmentally sound and cost-effective paint stewardship pilot program.

California Architectural Paint Recovery Program (AB 1343)

AB 1343, signed into law in 2010, requires manufacturers of architectural paint to establish and finance an architectural paint recovery program. A manufacturer of architectural paint solid in California must, individually or through a stewardship organization, submit an architectural paint stewardship plan on or before April 1, 2012 for approval by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

California Medicine Take Back (SB 966)

SB 966 was signed into law in October 2007 as Chapter 542, Statutes of 2007.

British Columbia Recycling Regulation of the Environmental Management Act (BC Reg. 449/2004)

On October 7, 2004, British Columbia passed the Recycling Regulation of the Environmental Management Act (B.C. Reg. 449/2004), a single, results-based framework that engages industry in new ways by shifting responsibility for environmentally sound product end-of-life management and recycling to producers and consumers.

California Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act of 2006 (AB 1125)

California passed in 2005 AB 1125 (the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act of 2006), which banned all household batteries from solid waste landfill disposal and requried retailers to take back rechargeable batteries for recycling at no cost to consumers.

Washington Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers Law (HB 1024)

In 2007, landmark legislation, HB 1024 (PDF file, 30KB), was passed to phase out the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) including Deca (Chapter 70.76 RCW). PBDEs are flame retardants used in consumer products.

Washington Children's Safe Products Act of 2008 (HB 2647/ SB 6530)

On April 1, 2008, the Children's Safe Products Act of 2008 (HB 2647 / SB 6530) was signed in to law. The bill prohibits the sale of toys and other children's products containing more than 90 parts per million (ppm) lead, or 40 ppm cadmium, or 1000 ppm of any of six phthalates starting July 1, 2009.

California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Prop. 65)

California’s Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, states that the State of California must maintain a list of toxic materials that can cause cancer, birth defects, or cause reproductive harm. Companies selling products in California containing one of these chemicals must place the Prop 65 warning on the product’s label that the product contains one of the Prop 65 chemicals.

California Toxic Toys Bill (AB 1108)

The California Toxic Toys Bill (AB 1108) was signed into law on October 14, 2007 as Chaptered 672 (PDF file, 74KB). The law will ban six types of phthalates from children's toys sold in California starting on January 1, 2009.
