The US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (HR 4040) became Public Law No: 110-314 on August 14, 2008. In 1972, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA), which created the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), to protect the public against unreasonable risks associated with consumer products.

US Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008 (S 906)

US Legislation: Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008 (S 906), known as the Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008, was signed into law on October 14, 2008 as Public Law No: 110-414. The law prohibits the export of elemental mercury from the United States beginning on January 1, 2010.

California Sharps Disposal Bill (SB 486)

SB 486 passed in 2009, requires sharps manufacturers to create and publish a plan that describes "how the manufacturer supports the safe collection and proper disposal" of medical sharps.

Washington Mercury-Containing Lighting Recycling Act (SB 5543)

SB 5543 (RCW 70.275) was signed by Governor Gregoire on March 19, 2010. The bill creates a convenient, statewide recycling program for mercury-containing lighting from residents in Washington State starting in 2013.

Oregon Mercury In Lighting Standards (SB 1512)

SB 1512, relating to lighting that contains mercury; creating new provisions; and amending ORS 646.608, passed and was signed by the Governor in March 2012. Enrolled SB 1512 will become effective January 1, 2013.

California Mercury Thermostat Collection Act (AB 2347)

AB 2347 (PDF file, 152KB), signed into law on September 29, 2008, is known as the Mercury Thermostat Collection Act of 2008. The bill requires thermostat manufacturers to establish and maintain a take-back program for mercury-added thermostats. AB 2347 follows the mercury-added phase-out bill AB 1415 by targeting manufacturers which sold mercury-added thermostats before January 1, 2006.

California Lighting Efficiency and Toxics Reduction Act (AB 1109)

AB 1109, the California Lighting Efficiency and Toxics Reduction Act, was signed into law as Chapter 534 (PDF file, 86KB), on October 12, 2007.

Oregon New Provisions for Beverage Containers (SB 1508)

SB 1508, Relating to beverage containers; creating new provisions; amending ORS 459.992; and declaring an emergency, passed and was signed into law in April 2012. The bill made minor changes to the major adjustments that were made to the Bottle Bill in 2007 and 2011. In 2007, water bottles were added and larger stores, primarily grocers, were required to take back all covered containers, not just what they sold.

Oregon's Beverage Container Act (SB 707)

SB 707, signed into law on June 7, 2007, amends the existing law by adding water and flavored water to the list of beverage containers included in the bill. The bill also created a nine-member Task Force to address issues including redemption centers, coverage of other beverage containers, increasing the deposit and implementing handling fees. Currently, distributors keep 100% of the unredeemed deposits and do not pay a handling fee to retailers.

Washington Single-serving Container Event Recycling (HB 2056)

HB 2056 was signed into law and went into effect in July, 2007. The bill requires beverage vendors at official gatherings and events, in areas for which residential and commercial recycling is already available, to provide recycling for single-serving plastic, glass and aluminum containers.
