The NWPSC Electronics Subcommittee is involved in many aspects of product stewardship for unwanted electronic products. They have conducted take back pilot projects for computers and TVs, written fact sheets and reports on product stewardship programs for unwanted electronic products and were a stakeholder in the process to draft the Washington and Oregon electronic product recycling laws and rules to implement the laws. In March 2010, the Northwest Product Stewardship Council produced a report (PDF, 2.75MB) covering the first nine months of operation of the E-Cycle Programs in Washington and Oregon.
HR 2284, the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (and its Senate counterpart, S1270), introduced into the US House of Representatives in June 2011, would prohibit the export from the United States of certain electronic wastes, beginning twenty four months after enactment.
Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee Chairman Gene Green (D-Texas) introduced House Resolution 1395 on July 31, 2008 which expresses opposition to federal policy which allows toxic electronic waste to be exported to developing countries. The resolution also encourages the US to join other developed nations which ban the export of such material.
In 2008, California Representative Mike Thompson (D) founded the bi-partisan Congressional E-Waste Working Group to work on standardizing national laws for recycling and disposing of discarded electronic and computer equipment.
